Janet Ouellette

I did my first tri in May of 2009 – TriZou sprint. I was looking for something to fill my free time so had volunteered at a local triathlon. I saw a lot of “normal” people racing (including someone I had gone to high school with) and decided I wanted to see if I could do one too. I came in close to last at that first race but I loved it. I did a couple per year after that for the next 5 years or so. When I started thinking about doing longer distances – specifically a 70.3 – I joined the club in the hopes that it would keep me motivated and help me reach that goal. I did my first 70.3 in August of 2016. I loved the distance but also really like the sprints and olympic distance too.

What is your favorite and least favorite gel flavor?
I don’t really like them much at all but I can tolerate the lemon-lime ones.

What is your favorite race?
I’ve always loved NewTown, but also have enjoyed the St Louis Tri the last 2 years.

What is the most challenging moment you’ve had during a race?
My first open water swim. It was a sprint race at Gateway. I made it through OK but was nervous about it the whole time.

What is your favorite place in or around St. Louis to train?
For cycling – NewTown is pretty much my go-to for longer rides. For running – Creve Coeur Park or Castlewood if I want to hit the trails.

What is your favorite thing about triathlon?
The fact that no matter what your pace (I’m a BOP’er), no one judges you – you’re just accepted for who you are.
